Last year around this time, Samsung officially announced the Gear VR Innovator Edition, which was meant primarily for virtual reality enthusiasts and developers.
While that device had a very small outlook on who to sell to, the content that Samsung wanted on the headset wasn’t so limited, and that trend continues with the announcement that a consumer-ready version of the device is gearing up to launch this year. At the Oculus Connect event, the company announced that the finalized version of the Gear VR will begin shipping in November of this year, and that it will retail for $99.
There isn’t much different in the hardware department for the Gear VR, but instead of simply supporting one device like last year (with the Galaxy Note 4), the new Gear VR will support all of Samsung’s flagship 2015 smartphones, which should help with adoption right out of the gate.
What do you think of the new Gear VR?
