Last month, LG released its web based bootloader unlocking tool for the G4 thereby allowing users to gain root access on it. However, the tool from the company only supported the H815 variant of the G4, and left owners of other variants of the handset in dark.
With a locked down bootloader, root access on the G4 has taken its own sweet time to arrive. Thanks to the hard work of developers like autoprime, jcase and illegalargument though, owners of all G4 variants can now enjoy root access on their handset, irrespective of whether the bootloader of their device is unlocked or not.
The process to gain root access on the handset requires G4 owners to run some commands in ADB and a couple of scrips before flashing a pre-rooted system image on the handset. As it is usually the case with such exploit based roots, make sure that you are running a firmware that is compatible with the exploit and remember not to accept any OTA updates in the future.
For now, the root method supports all popular variants of the LG G4, including AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, the international variant, and more. Support for other region based variants of the G4 like H818N/H818P is also scheduled to arrive later today.
