Xiaomi today announced that it sold 34.7 million smartphones in the first half of 2015 thereby registering a growth of 33% on a yearly basis.

In 2014, Xiaomi’s Lei Jun had said that he expects the company to ship 100 million smartphones in 2015. However, he revised that figure later on to around 80 million due to stiff competition in China from Apple and other Chinese brands like Huawei and Lenovo.

“Even with the China smartphone market slowing down, we did a stellar job of posting a 33 percent growth on last year’s numbers,” Lei Jun said. “It can be said that we outperformed the market and produced an excellent report card.”

Looking at the number of handsets the Chinese company has shipped in the first half of the year though, it does seem unlikely that it would be able to reach its forecast of 80 million handsets by the year end. It is likely that Xiaomi’s recent expansion into the Brazilian smartphone market will help it more than surpass its smartphone sales in the second half of this year when compared to H1, 2015.
