It has been less than two days since Google released a new version of Lollipop with bug fixes and enhancements, and Sony has already gone ahead and uploaded new Android 5.1 binaries for devices that it supports under its ‘AOSP for Xperia’ program.

The updated binaries allow custom ROM developers to create stable Android 5.1 based custom ROMs for the Xperia Z3, Xperia Z2, Z3 Compact and a few other Xperia devices.

Sony has been pretty quick in updating its AOSP for Xperia program to add updated binaries and source code that are required to get the latest version of Android up and running on its devices. On the other hand though, the company is the only major OEM that is yet to update even one of its devices to Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Leaks have indicated that the company intends to start the rollout of Android 5.0 Lollipop from next week, so Xperia owners don’t have to wait much longer now. And in case you want the very latest version of Lollipop, you can always unlock the bootloader of your handset and flash an Android 5.1 based custom ROM on it.
