At the beginning of this month, the Cyanogen team started rolling out CM12 — based on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop — for a selected bunch of devices. Since the builds are only a couple of weeks old, they lack a lot of features that we have grown accustomed to in CM11, including the popular and extremely useful Theme Engine.
Starting from today’s nightly though, the Theme Engine is making its way back to CM12 nightlies. The engine has been re-worked by the CM team to work with Lollipop without any issues. While all the existing CM11 themes will work with the updated theme engine, they will not look too great since they don’t adhere to the Material Design guidelines.
Do note though that themes based on the older T-Mobile based theme engine are not supported by CM12’s theme engine.
If you are a theme developer yourself, make sure to read this announcement from the CyanogenMod team as it contains important information regarding how themes will work under CM12.
