It has been a very long time coming, but Google Voice is now even more integrated with Google’s Hangouts functionality. The search giant officially announced the final transition on September 10 via a public blog post, bringing voice calls to the messaging app after a long wait.

As was the case with Google Voice, and making calls from the desktop within Google Mail, calls within the United States are free. Google points out that their international rates are very low as well:

Starting today you can make voice calls from Hangouts on Android, iOS and the web. It’s free to call other Hangouts users, it’s free to call numbers in the U.S. and Canada, and the international rates are really low. So keeping in touch is easier and more affordable than ever.

Hangouts version 2.3 is now rolling out to Android users, and with the update you’ll be able to make calls from within Hangouts. (The same update is also rolling out to iOS-based devices as well.)
