Sony, today, announced that it has started rolling out the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update for the Xperia S, SL and the acro S. The update comes after numerous delays from Sony, and at a point, when even the low-end Xperia handsets from the company have been running Android 4.1 for months.

Some blogs had reported a few days ago that the Xperia S Jelly Bean update is already live. However, that was not the case, and Sony has officially started rolling out the update from today.

Sony had initially stated that the Xperia S, and its siblings will get the Android 4.1 update in March. The company then pushed back the update to April, and soon after, again pushed it back to late-May. With just a day left for May to end, the company literally stuck to its word this time and rolled out the update in the nick of the time.

While Sony has not released an official change-log for the update yet, here is a rough unofficial change-log that I managed to gather from XDA forums -:

  • New 3.4.xx based kernel
  • Clear Phase, Clear Audio+ and xLoud
  • New pre-installed themes
  • New Setup guide
  • Ability to tweak the display colors
  • Updated suite of Media apps (Walkman, Album etc.) from Sony
  • Enhanced Camera app with new features and UI
  • Updated Launcher and new lock screen UI
  • New Dialer App
  • Small Apps as seen on Xperia Z
  • Google Now
  • Expandable notifications
  • Improved text-to-speech support

There are tons of other small and subtle changes that I might not have added to the above change-log. Early reports suggest that Xperia S users who have already got the update are very happy with overall improvement in performance and stability of the device.

Xperia ion owners need to note that the update for their handset is not yet live, but should sometime soon.
