According to the Taiwanese supply chain slash rumor website DigiTimes, handset makers have come to believe that there’s a space between 5 inch smartphones and 7 inch tablets that needs to be filled.

Ridiculous as it may seem, you can expect to see 6 inch smartphones hitting the market at some point in Q3. Technically, there’s already one out there from Huawei called the Ascend Mate, but that device hasn’t been made available outside of China … yet.

There are rumors saying the next Galaxy Note will have a 5.9 inch screen, and that Sony is thinking about making a 6.4 inch smartphone to compete with it, but other than that, there’s not really anything else on the horizon. The Galaxy Mega rumors, about the 5.8 inch and 6.3 inch phones might be true, but it’s early days.

But back to the DigiTimes piece, it specifically says that Sharp and Panasonic are “developing 6-inch ultra-thin high-end panels” for high end smartphones that will hit the market at the end of Q3. That’s code for September. And September is when IFA takes place in Berlin, the conference where Samsung announced both the first and second generation Galaxy Note.
